Dubuque firefighters are required to work 56 hours a week. In order to meet the constant demand of firefighting, we work in shifts. The schedule consists of 24 hours on and 24 off for five days with a 96 hour break after the initial five days.
Civil Service Examination Requirement
The City of Dubuque Civil Service Commission will conduct a written examination at an announced time in the future. At the time of the written exam, applicants must be 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or it's equivalent, possess Iowa paramedic certification, or have completed or currently be enrolled in a certified paramedic training program. The candidate must have an Iowa Paramedic Specialist Certification in their possession prior to appointment. The top 60 candidates based on written exam scores, will be invited to take a physical agility test.
